Summer wrap-up August 5, 2009

summer has been pretty great! my internship at sauce was awesome – i couldn’t have asked to work with a more fun group of people. i’ll miss them! my job at the spa has been great fun.. i was basically paid to look cute and do fun things on the computer, which was great. i’m hoping to go back again over winter break. the magic house was kind of a yawn-fest as usual but you know, it’s good money.

j.r. and i went on some fun day trips together, like johnson shut-ins, and i also took a trip with his family to lake of the ozarks, which was fun because i haven’t been there since i was a tot.

another thing i did this summer was discover my love for crafts. after finishing a quilt six years in the making i found myself wanting to do more! so far this summer (besides the quilt) i have repurposed one t-shirt from goodwill into an adorable tank top, tie-dyed with j.r. and will, made a cute little cosmetics bag out of vintage scarves and created three fleece tie blankets for myself, will and j.r. pretty awesome! right now i’m working on a green and black maxi dress and am starting a list of all of the crafts i want to do. i have a profile on cut out and keep now to keep track of all of my creations! it can be found here: http://www.cutoutandkeep.net/users/23514.  so fun!

right now i’m in maine and loving it, although i miss j.r. so far all i’ve done is sleep, read and play games but hey, i still have a week and a half ahead of me. tomorrow i’m participating in an archaeological dig in a cemetary. i’m so excited!!

more later, but before i sign off, here’s a final list of the stuff i did while an intern at sauce:

Summer is almost here… 22 days left of heck! April 23, 2009

I am dying to get out of school, mostly because I am tired of waking up so early to go to class everyday. Also I hate exams. Only 22 days left of this!

Also I don’t know what I want to do with my life. I don’t know what to major in or what I’ll do after college. Oh well, hopefully I’ll figure it out. I’m really tired of people (read: my family) deciding that since I can write well, I should be a journalist. There ARE other jobs on this planet where you can write and NOT have to be a journalist. I haven’t had that great of an experience with it this year, but I’m willing to give it another chance.

I’m really excited about this summer: internship, job and class at Meramec. Okay, not so excited about the class or the job, but I am SO excited about the internship at Sauce. Hopefully I get to write and do actual journalismy things. I’m hoping that having the internship will help me decide if I actually want to do journalsim.

I have a lot of books I want to read this summer: Catch-22, 100 Years of Solitude, Anna Karenina, and Watchmen, among others. I know I won’t get through them all but after being forced to read stuff for classes all year I just want to read for fun, like in the good old days of middle school, where I would read Betty and Veronica books all afternoon. Right now I’m in the middle of Of Love and Shadows, which is really amazing. I love that author, and I want to read more books from the genre, but I think I need to mix it up a little bit, since I have also read The House of the Spirits and Stories of Eva Luna by the same author. Supposedly 100 Years of Solitude is similar to Isabel Allende’s work, and I REALLY want to read it, but I feel the need to branch out.

J.R. and I have been together for 8 months and things are going really great. Love him so much!

I’ve been on a really weird opera kick recently. It all started when we read M. Butterfly in World Lit. I’ve started listening to Puccini and haven’t stopped! I keep getting weird looks from people because I guess they can hear it through my headphones. I really want to see a real live opera now… now to convince J.R. to take me…

I edited my second story for the Maneater today. I applied to be assistant editor for next year and I got it! I guess it’s kind of a bad time to start questioning my interest in journalism, but I think it will be a fun experience, and I really like the people involved with the Maneater.

Someone just called me the CQ bitch… great…

I just want to become a geologist, travel around, camp everywhere and then write a series of novels that become really famous and college students 50 years from now will read them and write essays about them. Is that too much to ask? I just need some ideas for my series…

I HAVE THE MOST LAME BLOG EVER!

Haha, peace

PS – I’m seeing Of Montreal tomorrow… can you say AWESOME?! yeah i’m excited.

PPS – I finished J.R.’s scarf FINALLY. And just in time for summer. Now I need to start on this: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=193480.0

PPPS – I need to make a summer to do list.

Vday and more February 15, 2009

i had a great valentine’s day this year! j.r. and i went to my favorite restaurant, bangkok gardens (great thai), and then went to an african dance performance, which was really cool.  he really loved the gift i gave him, which was a letter/poem i wrote incorporating different candy with the candy actually included.  also, i gave him a webcam for the summer, when i’ll be gone for a while in maine.  he gave a silver locket with a flower engraved on it – it’s very pretty.  we had a great day together.  haha, i forgot.. the day actually started with us watching zack and miri make a porno with elijah and adrian.  that movie was pretty good, but not the best. there were some parts that seemed really forced and unnecessary. the guy who played zack (omg i always forget his name…) is really good at playing a slacker-type character.  he does it in like every movie he’s in but, hey, if it works why stop?  i definitely thought he was the best in that movie, although the supporting characters were very funny and of course they guy who plays darrell in the office was really good (gah can’t remember his name either). anyway, that was an interesting start to valentine’s day.  that night, we were supposed to watch amelie but we fell asleep early so we watched it the next day. that was a GREAT movie! i loved it.  amelie and slumdog millionaire are two movies i’ve seen recently that i would recommend to anyone.

Weekend, finally! January 30, 2009

Sitting in my journalism class right now, waiting to get out. I have 45 more minutes of class until the weekend! I value the weekends so much more now that I have class at 8am every weekday.  Besides having to wake up at an ungodly time every morning, I’ve actually had a really good week. I really love all of my classes and I’m proud of myself for keeping up with my reading which is sometimes tempting to forget about.. Also I wrote a new story for the Maneater which was really fun.  I’m just in a really good mood!

In class right now, we’re actually talking about blogs. Are blogs journalism? Are bloggers considered citizen journalists? Since we decided that news is relevant, breaking events that people would care about  knowing and we think that journalists are people who present news in a way that people can take in and understand, I believe that blogs are journalism, in a way.  Since bloggers often philosophize about what’s going on in the world, you can argue that they are serving as journalists by interpreting and presenting the news for others to read .  Obviously, most blogs do not reach the large audience that mass media does, but for the audiences that bloggers do have, they are a news source.

This video clip is really funny and also pretty much summarizes what we’ve been talking about in class recently.

Anyway, I’ll post more later.. class is ending! Let the good times roll!

new year, new blog, clever title January 23, 2009

n1299990353_30637977_91083happy new year everyone! i started this blog because i wanted to start writing down things that happen to me in daily life and how i feel. my scary english teacher told us to do this and i thought i would take her advice because my mom is always telling me to do it too.  also i forgot my diary at home so this is a good replacement. i’m a journalism and anthropology major at mizzou and i love it here. my classes are great so far (we’ve only had a few days), except for my english class where i have a crazy professor. my boyfriend is awesome (his name is jr) and i love him v. much! he’s very supportive of me in everything i do and i really appreciate that, especially since i catch a lot of flack from my parents.  i have two best friends, reenie and lizzy, who go to school far away from me :-( i miss them very much!!  i have two little brothers who are crazy but i love them anyway. i miss them already even though i just got back to school from winter break! my parents are very awesome even though i fight with them a lot.  sometimes we don’t get along very well at all, but i really like hearing from them at school and it means a lot to me when they call me. right now i’m very confused about what i want to be when i grow up. actually, i have a LOT of things i want to be when i grow up, and that’s a problem! i know i want to get my journalism degree, but i’m not so sure that journalism is exactly what i want to do. its an honor for me to be in the journalism school here, so i don’t think i should drop out. besides, i’m doing really well so far and i love to write and talk to people so i should be good! right now i’m taking archaeology and its really fun and interesting so far.  i hope to do something with that when i grow up… it’s weird to think that i’m technically already an adult! i really don’t feel like one… anyway, i plan on blogging everyday about how i feel (boring for everyone else but me) and what i’m doing.  hopefully it will be insightful and entertaining. cheers!
